Hana’s Iron Infusion Story at Coverdale Clinics

When a high-achieving teenage athlete started falling behind, the answer wasn’t more rest. It was the right diagnosis, the right treatment, and fast access to care.

Hana is 14 years old and rarely slows down. A competitive swimmer and cross-country runner, she trains up to 10 hours a week in the pool, on top of running seasons, school, and everything else that comes with being a teenager. Sports aren’t just a hobby for Hana. They’re her social life, her identity, and something she genuinely loves.

So, when things started to fall apart last fall, her family knew something was wrong.

The Symptoms Were Easy to Miss

It started subtly: by December, Hana was hitting a wall in training: fatigued, struggling to keep up, her mood noticeably lower. Small injuries that should have healed quickly were lingering. By February she could barely swim 100 meters without being completely out of breath.

When she did blood work, the tests revealed the problem: her ferritin was 16, which is low for anyone, and especially for an active 14-year-old. Her doctor confirmed iron deficiency and discussed treatment options, recommending IV iron infusion therapy.

A Seamless Experience, From Start to Finish

Meredith, Hana’s mom, submitted the referral to Coverdale Infusion Clinic on Tuesday. The clinic called back the very next day. Hana had her infusion on Thursday.

The appointment took about an hour at Coverdale Infusion Clinic Kingston. The clinic was easy to access, with plenty of parking spaces and spacious treatment rooms. Like many teens, Hana was a little nervous walking in. But her nurse, Megan, took the time to walk her through everything and made sure she felt comfortable from the moment she arrived.

Within two weeks, she started noticing a difference. By the four-week mark, the transformation was significant.

“The most surprising thing wasn’t that she was performing better at sports. It was her mood. She’s just so much happier. She has more energy for her friends. She seems like a completely different kid,” says Meredith, Hana’s mom.

Iron Deficiency and Chronic Conditions

Iron deficiency is not always a standalone issue. In many cases, it is a frequent complication for people living with chronic conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, or rheumatoid arthritis that can interfere with the body’s ability to absorb iron, leading to ongoing deficiency that is difficult to manage with oral supplements alone.

IV iron infusion therapy is often a well-supported and preferred treatment option for these patients, delivering iron directly into the bloodstream for faster, more effective results.
